Prior to the May 2009 update, the rules were organised by number, not by topic.
The former in-game rules include:

1. Offensive Language (includes spamming)
2. Item Scamming
3. Pass word Scamming
4. Bug Abuse (Cheating)
5. Jagex Staff Impersonation
6. Account Sharing/Trading
7. Using Third Party Software Like Bots (titled "Macroing" in-game)
8. Multiple Logging-In
9. Encouraging Others to Break Rules (all rules included)
10. Advertising/Websites
11. Real World Item Trading
12. Asking for Personal Details (phone numbers,emails etc.)
